NCBFAA Elects Texan, Darrell Sekin, to Its Top Post

Washington, DC: Darrell J. Sekin Jr., president and chief executive officer of DJS International Services, was elected president of the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America, Inc. (NCBFAA) at the organization’s annual convention April 22-25, 2012 in Hollywood, Fla. Sekin founded DJS International Services, a Colleyville, TX-based international freight forwarding and customs brokerage firm, in 1985.

In addition to President Sekin, the NCBFAA membership also elected:

·   Vice President Geoffrey C. Powell, COF, Director of Operations, C. H. Powell Co., Linthicum, MD.

·   Treasurer William, S. App, J. W. Allen & Co., Inc., Kenner, LA.

·   Secretary Amy Magnus, Branch Office Manager, A.N. Deringer, Inc., Champlain, NY.

President Sekin has worked in international trade for over 40 years. He has held a variety of leadership roles in NCBFAA and served as president of both the North Texas Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association and the Houston Customs Brokers Association. He is highly regarded as a trusted, informed advocate by his industry peers and an operations expert by federal officials.

International trade runs in the Sekin family’s blood. The incoming NCBFAA president followed his father, Darrell J. Sekin Sr., into the industry. The elder Sekin founded Sekin & Co. in the early-1960s. At its height, Sekin & Co. had over 150 employees with offices at D/FW Airport and in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla.

Melissa Sekin Meyer, chief financial officer of DJS International Services, represents the third generation of Sekins in the family business.

Under the new NCBFAA president’s guidance, DJS International Services has grown from a two-man operation into one of the southwest’s leading independently owned, international freight forwarding and customs brokerage firms. The company employs 25 import, export, logistics and support personnel.

President Sekin was NCBFAA Vice President and has been an active member for nearly three decades. He served on the Customs Committee for more than 10 years and was chairman of the NCBFAA Educational Institute Committee as well as serving on various other Association Subcommittees. He earned a bachelors degree in business management from LeTourneau University. He and his wife, Marty, are lifelong, native Texans and have been members of St. Michaels Catholic Community for more than 30 years. They have two daughters and three grandchildren.

Headquartered in Washington, DC, the NCBFAA represents nearly 866 member companies with 100,000 employees in international trade - the nation's leading freight forwarders, customs brokers, ocean transportation intermediaries (OTIs), NVOCCs and air cargo agents, serving more than 250,000 importers and exporters. Established in 1897 in New York, NCBFAA is the effective national voice of the industry. Through its various committees, counsel and representatives, the Association maintains a close watch over legislative and regulatory issues that affect its members. It keeps them informed of these and other related issues through its weekly Monday Morning eBriefing and various meetings as well as conferences throughout the year.
