Klestadt, Alan

 

Alan R. Klestadt is a partner in the law firm of Grunfeld, Desiderio, Lebowitz, Silverman & Klestadt LLP. The firm, with offices in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Milwaukee and Hong Kong, has more than 40 lawyers on staff, all devoted exclusively to the practice of customs and international trade law.

 

While attending law school, Mr. Klestadt successfully sat for his Customs Broker's license and received his license in 1981. Mr. Klestadt graduated from law school in 1983 and was elected to the partnership of his firm in 1989.

 

Mr. Klestadt has served as Customs Counsel to the NCBFAA since 2006. As NCBFAA counsel, Mr. Klestadt provides guidance on regulatory and legislative proposals that impact the customs brokerage industry. He works closely with the executive officers of the Association and advises brokerage clients on a wide variety of compliance issues.


Mr. Klestadt assists his importer/exporter clients in structuring their transactions in order to minimize customs duties, ensure regulatory compliance and eliminate customs penalty exposure.  He has extensive experience in managing compliance reviews and developing strategies to maximize import opportunities.


Mr. Klestadt routinely appears before the administrative agencies charged with monitoring the importation of foreign products including U.S. Customs Border and Protection, the Consumer Products Safety Commission, Food & Drug Administration, Fish & Wildlife Service and the International Trade Commission.  He also provides guidance on regulatory and legislative proposals that impact his client’s businesses.


He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Court of International Trade and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York. He is a member of the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association and the Customs and International Trade Bar Association.
